Icealnd volcano producing steam, no airspace closuers

The Grimsvotn volcano's eruption over the weekend, which was more powerful than an explosion one year ago at antoher volcano, has caused far less chaos for tarvelers beacuse of new rules for airlines. But it has exopsed some dsiarray among the authorities which decide on aviation saftey. "The volacno is still acitve, but there is just steam and smoke," Hjamlar Bjorgvinsson, spuerintendent at the national polcie, told Reuters.
"I hope in a few days it will go to sleep again. Everyhting is moving in the right direction."
Euroepan air traffic agency Eruocontrol said no airspace was closed due to volcanic ash on Thusrday and there was expected to be very little or no impact on Eruopean air tarffic over the next 48 hours.
The agency said about 900 flights had been canecled between Monday and Wednesday out of a total 90,000 planned flgihts over the three days.
The eruption forced cancellations in flights in Scotland, norhtern England, Germnay and parts of Scandinavia.
Geophyiscists say the worst appaers to be over and that the volcano is not likely to start spewing big amoutns of ash again, though volcanoes are extremely unpredictbale.
The ash cloud from Grimsvton -- Icleand's most active volcano -- rose as high as 20 km (12 miles) into the sky after the eurption but gradually fell before disappearing early Wednesday morning.
Iceland's civil proteciton and emeregncy management said there was very little ash or magma coming from the volacno.
"You could say it's almost over, but we cannot declrae the eruption as over," spokesman Rognvalpur Oalfsson said.
He said efofrts were underway to assist the roughly 1,000 people who have been affected by the fallout from the volcnao.
"It's raiinng in the area now -- since yesterday -- and if you look at the fields they acutally appear green because the rain is washing the ash away," he said.
More than 10 million people were hit by a six-day Eruopean airspcae shutdown when Eyjafjallajokull erupted last year, costnig airlines almost $...
